Verja wanted to join the army, but couldn't fit in the ranks of the Shadow soldiers; he was too large and light-colored and had no affinity for sneaking. He became a mercenary for awhile, and was brought in by one of Ayella's patrols while on the hunt. She was weary and needed new leaders after the Old Council debacle. Verja had the self-control of a leader and the intensity of a Nature warrior. She put him to the test, and found he took command firmly, but not without reason or empathy.
