Origins

There were many consequences the day the Arcanist burst forth.

The Three, great scholars who had embarked on a journey to research the geology of the Reaches, were struck by bolts of nuclear, arcane energy. They were fused to the mountain on which they stood, transformed in to crystalline monoliths of unimaginable size, cursed and blessed to remain sentient and immortal but forever rooted in the middle of the sea. Their thirst for knowledge and magic remained insatiable; they had immense power, but without bodies to wield it.

After centuries, a meteor exploded in to the center of their mountain, birthing a tiny crystal shard that unfurled in the perfect form of Oona.

Across the sea, Pádraig sensed an immense jolt. He begged his lover Órfhlaith that she might accompany him on this part of his Search; she had not yet found her Charge, and he was loathe to lose her.

And so, Pádraig arrived to find the clan he was to build, the small Fae he was to serve. Together in their hollowed mountain they created a powerful nexus for scholarship and magic: Andromeda.

The Hollow Mountain

Andromeda resides on an island referred to as the Hollow Mountain, formed of a single curved peak. The front of the mountain is dominated by the Three, powerful crystal monoliths who are the backbone of the clan. Though inanimate, the Three are sentient, communicating via telepathy and the strong ley lines beneath the mountain itself, which are believed to have contributed to the dramatic transformation of the Three during the Arcanist's birth.

Andromeda's scholarship and works are renowned within many communities in Sornieth, and collaboration and travel are seen not only as beneficial but critical. However, the Hollow Mountain's location is incommunicable in the interest of security. The Three maintain a field that is penetrable only if you are deliberately escorted to the Mountain by an Andromedian family member, or if the Three actively desire for you to find it. In addition, through the use of powerful warding magic, it is impossible to hear the location spoken if you have never before been present on the island.

The Hollow Mountain is rumored to move; while this has not been and cannot be verified, the last known whisperings place it several miles off the coast of the Sunbeam Ruins.

DRAFTS IN PROGRESS.

the clan recently moved to Light and this lore has not been edited since a major lair reorganization; take the below with a grain of salt!

Residency & Social Order

While a number of clan residents are born-and-bred Andromedians, the majority are dragons from other birthclans - across all Flights - who seek interdisciplinary studies including academic, artistic, and magical pursuits. These residents arrive in a number of ways:

  • Valuable collaborators are often invited to visit and are fetched by an Andromedian escort, typically one of Na Fianna; a number opt to remain more permanently.
  • Traveling Andromedian groups may extend an invitation to an individual they encounter, if they feel the individual would be a valuable addition; clan residents keep careful notes on gaps in their knowledge they wish to fill, always seeking for Andromeda's work to be holistic and to take advantage of multiple minds.
  • Individuals might actively seek out a traveling group to request an invitation.
  • In rare cases, when The Three intuit someone with incredible knowledge or magical power, a "happenstance" -- such as a storm or a navigation mistake -- will be devised such that the individual lands at the island.

Groups of Andromedians regularly venture around Sornieth, conducting research, meeting with other scholarly clans, pursuing personal interests, or a combination of all three. Travelers are accompanied by either one or more of the clan's trained fighters. A member of the Seers or of the Thaumaturgy is also frequently present, depending upon the nature of the trip; they are especially valuable in sussing out the intentions of an individual who has never been to the island, who is seeking to return with them.

Leadership Families

The High Clergy

The ruling family of Andromeda, including Oona and her consort Nuallan, and their first daughter Gemma and her consort Perseus. They oversee and delegate day-to-day keeping of the clan.

The Scholarship

While all clan residents incorporate personal research to some degree, the Scholarship act as the key caretakers for Andromeda's various labs, libraries, and workspaces, as well as archivists for clan history and curators of the work being done, allowing others to find and reference past work. The Scholarship's personal living spaces are interspersed among the workspaces located in the middle levels of the Hollow Mountain.

The Seers

A quiet and secretive, but eminently powerful family. They rarely speak with those other than themselves, and then only when absolutely necessary. While they are known to have visions of events that may come to pass, their most important (and most unsettling) power is the ability to read the emotional energy and inner biological workings of an individual. They are startlingly effective lie detectors. It is suspected that they communicate with one another telepathically and are in frequent conversation with the Three, and that they have powers yet undiscovered by others.

The Hearth

Composed of talented smiths and powerful mages, the Hearth lovingly weave comfort amongst the security of Andromeda. They value beauty in the details. Family members may be seen acting as internal ambassadors - running errands for the sick and fetching healers, forging friendships between residents, behaving as conflict mediators, and guiding the confused; helping to furnish rooms, along with various lighting and heating innovations; and assisting visitors and new residents in getting settled. Family members emit a distinctive calming and warming sensation unlike any other individuals, and many Andromedians enjoy simply being in their vicinity. They are particularly popular among young dragons wanting to begin studying smithing, but who are feeling too intimidated to approach another clan member about a specialty.

Vocational & Residential Families

Imperial Roosts

Due to their sheer size, the resident Andromedian Imperials live in roosts and massive cave systems within the top ridges of the Monoliths and the Mountain, allowing them to enter and exit from above. Benedicta is the only non-Imperial resident, a Skydancer residing with her mate Mairtin; the pair are skilled pathologists and healers. Given their vantage points and stamina the Andromedian Imperials frequently act as scouts and escorts for traveling groups in addition to their other personal duties and research.
